Creative director Alex Hutchinson reveals the extent of the new naval combat in Assassin's Creed 3.

Assassin's Creed 3's naval combat only represents a small part of the overall game, but is "a hugely important and satisfying addition" to the series according to creative director Alex Hutchinson.

Naval battles in Assassin's Creed 3 were revealed at E3, and represent Ubisoft's attempts to give players an even bigger environment to play in. "We wanted to go wide as well as deep," Hutchinson told NowGamer.

"So while the naval experience is nowhere near as large as the core game, it is a hugely important and satisfying addition to our universe."

So why add naval sections to Assassin's Creed formula now? "AC has always been a third-person action-adventure game, built around the gameplay pillars of navigation, combat and social stealth," Hutchinson explained. "We felt that these were a perfect match for gameplay that involved navigating your boat through various sea conditions, managing the gunnery crews of your boat and trying to sneak through heavy fog at night."

Although it might seem like quite a good match for multiplayer however, Assassin's Creed 3's naval battles will be strictly a campaign-only affair, Hutchinson confirmed.

Assassin's Creed 3 launches for Xbox 360, PS3 on 31 October 2012, following for PC a few weeks later.

I'd much rather have multiplayer, but if it means that we don't have any more of that first person animus crap I'm all for it.
