Nolan North is the busiest man in videogames. The prolific voice actor has performed in roles as varied as the Assassin’s Creed series, the Uncharted games, Gears of War 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Batman: Arkham City, Dragon Age and more. But if he could go back a re-record any of his performances, which one would it be?
During a recent interview with the man himself, we asked North that very question. The answer was pretty interesting. Nolan told us, “Well, y’know, I don’t have any regrets. And I wouldn’t say I choose the characters because the developers ultimately choose me. But if I could go back and redo one though, let’s put it that way, I would go back and redo my Prince of Persia.
Nolan played the Prince in Ubisoft’s 2008 reboot of the series, providing the cocky character with an American accent.
“I just didn’t really feel like the American accent worked with the artistry that the game showed,” he said. “I thought that was a beautiful game and it was a fun game to play, but the flowing robes and the style of what he looked like - I really wanted to do a little bit of a Middle Eastern accent, or actually a slightly British accent like Jake Gyllenhaal did [in the 2010 movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time]."
North continued, “I just think it needed a little bit of flavour to it, because I just felt that the middle-American accent didn’t match the beautiful art work that the game had. For me, personally, there was just a slight disconnect. So if I could go back and re-do one, I’d wanna give him a little more style. I’m a proud American, but there’s not that much flair to the American accent. There’s not much of a romantic style to an American accent, necessarily.
“Prince of Persia would be the one I would probably wanna re-do.”
